South African Safari

Those who want to take a safari holiday must look to South Africa for their holiday destination. It is also a great destination if you are on a budget. Safari holidays are not known for their low price tag but it is possible.

The SANParks organization takes care of the National Parks in South Africa. There are 20 in total. They also have their own properties inside the parks which are cheaper for those who want to go on safari than those that are privately owned.

If you want to stay in one of the national parks, you have the option of a campsite, cottage, guesthouse or hut. The parks have a central website. There are self-catering options and even a shop or two.

Consider a wilderness tent and really get away from it all. This accommodation option has no electricity but puts you in close proximity to the animals. Some might find this too daunting but many are put off by the bigger camps, which can be crowded during peak season. Try the bush camps where you are away from the crowds and where you can see cheetahs and leopards at close quarters.

Going for a safari to the Kruger National Park means that you also have access to guides who can take you on walks or drives and there is also support staff available on hand. The camps are very popular and if you want to be sure that you can spend time there, you need to make sure that you book a place around a year in advance.

You could also try the Pilanesberg National Park which is just a relatively short drive from Johannesburg. It can get very busy during the weekends and school holidays though, so a good time to visit is during the week.
