Famous South Africans

Not everyone realizes that there are many famous South Africans but they do exist!

Nelson Mandela

No list of famous South Africans would be complete without Mandela at the top of it. A long-time opponent of apartheid, he spent 27 years in prison and went on to become the president of the country. He died in 2013 at the age of 95 but not before winning the Nobel Peace Prize and changing the course of history in South Africa.

Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu was another opponent of apartheid and he became famous in the 1980s. He was appointed Archbishop of Cape Town, the first black South African to hold the post. He worked hard to promote peace all over the world which was recognized when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He also received the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005.

Francois Pienaar

One of the most famous sportsmen in the country, he was the South African rugby captain who led his team to victory in the 1967 World Cup. It was the first time that the South African team had won the World Cup and while he probably wasn’t the best player in the team, this victory has ensured his place in the history books.

Ernie Els

A professional golfer who was at the top of the game for a number of years after he made a name for himself in the 1990s. Nicknamed the ‘The Big Easy’, he is known for being very chilled out and he has been featured in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Charlize Theron

A Hollywood actress, Charlize Theron has won critical acclaim for her work, most notably for the movie ‘Monster’. She played real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos and won an Oscar for her performance. She came from a troubled background and is now one of the most famous women in the world.
